Synopsis
A Catholic priest and an idealistic young English teacher caught up in the 1994 Rwandan genocide must decide whether to stay with the Tsutsis or flee the massacring Hutus.
Review
Any movie that deals with a subject so recent and raw as the Rwandan genocide runs the risk of seeming irreverent should it veer too much from the factual truth of events, so Caton-Jones ensures a level of truthfulness by filming in the real Rwandan locations (unlike last year's Hotel Rwanda, which was filmed in South Africa). No-one does agonised like John Hurt, and the latest English actor to become Hollywood hot-property, Hugh Dancy, supports him well. Worthy and genuinely emotional and educational, it would be nice if for once a film of this nature were made that didn’t have to navigate its way into an African crisis by showing the experience through the eyes of white middle-class westerners.
