Synopsis
After a string of violent armed robberies, two Parisian detectives, Vrinks (Auteuil) and Klein (Depardieu) are given the task of bringing down the gang. With the imminent retirement of the Chief of Police, whoever cracks the case will become the new top man. To complicate matters, Vrinks is now married to an old flame of Klein's. While their methods may differ, both men take the case into new areas that will blur the lines between law-enforcing and criminality.

Review
Billed as ‘the French Heat’, perhaps because of it’s appropriation of France’s two leading actors of the last twenty years (the DeNiro and Pacino of France, by implication), 36 also shares a glossy, big-budget sheen with Michael Mann’s cops and robbers classic. Both men here are superb, with Auteuil splendid as the morally conflicted Vrinks, while Depardieu (especially with a bristling Gallic moustache) is all too believable as a man who is capable of great violence and dark revenge in pursuit of his goals. The plot may creak at times, but the set-piece gun-battles are well choreographed and nail-bitingly tense, and the supporting performances are all very good indeed. A satisfying cop thriller of the kind rarely tackled outside Hollywood, only slightly let-down by overly Americanised subtitles.
