Review
Let's be honest, we've seen this kind of film before - someone shallow and selfish learns that they're dying and has to make it up with their family and friends before they die. Where Ozon's movie differs from the norm is that central character Romain may struggle with making things up to his family, but he remains selfish and self-centred to the last. Only in a touching scene with his grandmother - a luminous Jeanne Moreau - does he open up to someone close to him. By deviating from the pattern of 'remorseful dying people' movies, Time to Leave may inject a little originality, but this means a satisfactory resolution is unforthcoming, and we spend a lot of time in the company of a man who is difficult to empathise with. A subplot involving Romain (who is gay) agreeing to impregnate a woman whose husband is infertile is unconvincing.
