Synopsis
Fading movie star Howard Spence rides off the set of his latest Western, in the midst of an apparent drink and drug-fuelled mid-life crisis. After visiting his mother (Saint), he next tracks down an old flame (Lange), and discovers he may have fathered a child. Or two.
Review
Twenty-four years after the critical success of Paris, Texas, Wenders and playwright Shepard re-team with mixed results. The movie looks ravishing, thanks to beautiful cinematography from Franz Lustig, and the unusual and fascinating locations chosen for location shooting - Elko, Nevada, and Butte, Montana. It's the uneven performances that let the movie down - Shepard, Lange and Polley are all fine, and the scenes featuring Eve Marie Saint are the best moments of the film, but Gabriel Mann's mannered performance skews the movie's tone, and Tim Roth as an insurance 'bounty hunter' sent to find Spence is an acquired taste - Stuart found him wryly amusing, I found him deeply unconvincing. The pace is languid, while never providing enough intrigue to keep interest levels up, and the conclusion is unsurprising and over-sentimental.
